Sunrise Public School is a non-profit, relief institution located in Loni, Ghaziabad. It was established by Miles2Smile Foundation primarily for the victims of the Delhi Pogrom 2020. Scores of people were displaced from their homes in Northeast Delhi and the children could not go back to schools. Also, due to the COVID-induced lockdown, many victim families struggled with digital transition due to challenges around household access to digital devices.
The school initially opened in 2002 and was facing closure due to the financial crisis of the COVID-induced lockdown. Miles2Smile Foundation was looking for a structure to start an educational institute. In August 2020, the Foundation took over the administration of the existing school and enrolled 180 children to the school. The effort has enabled as many as 350 students back to classrooms so far. The Foundation curates educational content tailored for victim children and aims to help children from marginalized communities of India break barriers to education.
We know that each student is a unique individual with different interests, talents and learning styles. At Sunrise Public School, we provide our students with access to Promethean programs that engage and taps into their specific interests and aspirations. Various activities and competitions are held throughout the year to provide a platform to engage students by honing their potential. Sports, cultural and literary activities hosted in the school encourage 100% participation of the students.
We develop a culture of excellence that includes a robust instructional and educational program with a focus on reading and writing workshops, as well as by building literacy and competency across all subject areas. This includes the integration of science, social sciences and languages into the curriculum.
At the school, we make it a point to employ teachers and educators from Shiv Vihar, Delhi, the area severely affected by the Delhi Pogrom of 2020 to support them financially and to give them an opportunity to rebuild their lives and to ensure their active participation and cooperation in changing lives of young learners. Thus, Miles2Smile Foundation has created a sustainable model of livelihood.
All in all, Sunrise Public School is a community of learners including students, parents and staff who are dedicated to creating an academically rigorous, culturally caring and inclusive learning environment.
